Hackers steal over $128 million in massive Balancer breach

31.10.2025

The decentralized finance protocol Balancer became the target of a major hack in which attackers stole at least $128 million. According to analytics firm Nansen, hackers transferred WETH, osETH, and wstETH tokens to new wallets, after which the attack spread across several blockchain networks where Balancer operates. Trading Strategy co-founder Mikko Ohtamaa believes the incident was caused by an error in the smart contract verification process. He noted that the attackers were able to alter internal balances, suggesting a complex manipulation scheme. Security experts have not yet determined the exact mechanism of the exploit but continue to record transactions distorting asset accounting within the protocol. Data from the analytics platform Cyvers shows that the stolen funds are already being laundered through the anonymization service Tornado Cash. Following the incident, the BAL token price fell by more than 6%, reaching around $0.9. Charts from the OKX exchange show a sharp decline after several large liquidity pool withdrawals. The Balancer team confirmed the breach and reported that cybersecurity specialists are conducting an investigation. The project’s representatives promised to share verified information and next steps once the initial analysis is complete. The Balancer hack once again highlights the vulnerability of complex DeFi systems and the importance of thorough smart contract audits before updates are launched.
