SEC approves Paxos as the first blockchain-enabled clearing agency in the U.S
30.05.2026
on May 28, 2026, Paxos, a leading blockchain infrastructure provider, announced that its subsidiary, Paxos Securities Settlement Company, LLC (PSSC), received registration as a clearing agency from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under Section 17A of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. This makes PSSC the first and only blockchain-native firm approved by the SEC to provide clearing and settlement services as a central securities depository in the United States.
Paxos CEO and co-founder Charles Cascarilla said the registration was the result of seven years of work with the SEC, beginning with a 2019 no-action letter and a settlement pilot program conducted with some of the world's largest financial institutions. He emphasized that as a registered clearing agency, PSSC will be able to provide clearing and settlement services for eligible securities transactions, allowing the company's partners to continue to evolve with the market and blockchain technology.
PSSC's registration builds on years of experience in clearing and settlement. In February 2020, after receiving no-action relief from the SEC, Paxos began clearing and settling US equities on a daily basis with leading global financial institutions. This successfully demonstrated that blockchain-based infrastructure can provide same-day settlement, reduce costs and increase operational efficiency in a fully regulated environment.
With this registration, Paxos adds another important capability to its infrastructure platform, which is trusted by the world's leading enterprises to build, launch and scale digital asset-based products. Paxos enables partners to modernize faster, launch new products with confidence and reliably expand into the future of financial services on a regulated basis.
This marks a significant step in the integration of blockchain technology into traditional financial markets, opening up new opportunities for more efficient and secure securities transactions.
